The Tuggeranong town centre will see an extra 7,800 housing dwellings, the transformation of major streets such as Soward Way into a people-friendly boulevard and boosting pedestrian access around the centre, Minister for the Environment and Sustainable Development, Simon Corbell, said today.
Mr Corbell release the finalised Tuggeranong town centre master plan that looks to make Tuggeranong a unique place to live and work, to boost residential development and enhance the gateway to the mountains and the Murrumbidgee River.
"This plan sets out a direction that will create the opportunity for a more sustainable urban lifestyle close to some of Canberra's best natural landscapes," Mr Corbell said.
"The plan works with the town centre's street grid to establish views to the mountains, residential redevelopment that can take advantage of good solar orientation, walking and cycling links to Lake Tuggeranong; and sunny, sheltered spaces for outdoor dining and relaxation."
Mr Corbell said a mix of on-street and basement car parking would be increased to ensure convenient parking for centre users for both quick trips and all day parking needs.
"The plan outlines short-term parking on streets and long-term parking on the perimeter of the town centre.
"Up to 7,800 new dwellings in the town centre are recommended to support the viability of existing retail and other services and facilities in the centre and the plan recommends better connections to the valley's unique landscape by improving pedestrian access to the lake, and protecting views to surrounding hills and mountains.
"One of the key features is turning Soward Way into a people friendly boulevard, encouraging Anketell St to continue to grow as one of the town's attractions in being a vibrant pedestrian friendly street, and with strong connections to the lake and retail areas.
"The Government is proposing to relocate the bus station in Tuggeranong to a more central location on Reed Street to incorporate these public transport services into the centre of the busy retail and residential area.
"Improved pedestrian links from the Town Centre to the lake foreshore are also addressed in the Tuggeranong plan, which help to maintain the healthy vibrancy of the area."
A precinct code will now be developed to outline land uses, heights and design details are appropriate for each block in the centre. As sites develop and redevelop they will be required to comply with the precinct code.
