Minister showcases Canberra's sustainability success

Posted On August 28, 2013

Simon Corbell, MLA

Minister for the Environment and Sustainable Development, Simon Corbell, will tonight showcase the ACT Government's ground breaking efforts to make Canberra a national leader in sustainability.

Mr Corbell will speak about the ACT Government's progress so far and its vision for the future, at a meeting of the Infrastructure Sustainability Council of Australia (ISCA).

"Large scale solar power projects, the Energy Efficiency Improvement Scheme, sustainable planning regulations, and the Capital Metro light rail project, are all examples of the ways we are embracing renewable energy and improving Canberra's public transport system in a sustainable way," Mr Corbell said.

"This event will provide a great opportunity to share our innovative work with other sustainability stakeholders."

In 2012, the ACT Government legislated greenhouse gas targets to reduce its emissions by 40 per cent from 1990 levels by 2020, 80 per cent by 2050, with no net emissions by 2060.

"The ACT Government's strong sustainability record was boosted by the recent announcement of two new solar farms for the ACT," Mr Corbell said.

"Together with the Royalla solar farm announced last year, the solar farms will supply enough renewable electricity to power 10,000 ACT households, and subject to receiving necessary planning approval, represent more than $100 million in sustainable energy infrastructure development in the Territory."

Tonight's event will also continue to raise the profile of the Infrastructure Sustainability Ratings Scheme, which was launched in Canberra in February 2012.

The scheme evaluates the sustainability of infrastructure based on design, construction and operation, and is the only scheme of its kind in Australia.
